About Cakartas

The patterned encaustic cement tiles are produced by the hand work and with the help of moulds. Although there are used the moulds during the production process, the mastership is necessary for the cement tile production.

The raw materials of the encaustic tiles are cement and marble powder. The tiles are pressed by the hydraulic presses. These tiles are hand-made, decorative and colorful tiles which are often used on the floor. The encaustic tile production has hundred years past and the tiles become classic and nostalgic decorative material.

The production of the cement tiles have begun in South France in the 19th century. Then, they have become very popular at the rest of Europe and in America. By the beginning of using hydraulic presses, the modern production process has started.

In Turkey, the production of encaustic tiles began in the early 20th century. They were used at old mansions and at the places which represented Ottoman-Turkish architectures. Moreover, the cement tiles were also used at a lot of Greek houses. However, the encaustic tiles have lost its popularity in the second half of the 20th century. By 2000s, they become very popular again and the cement tiles are indispensable for the nostalgic decorations.

The cement tiles are supplementary for the decorations at cafes, restaurants, hotels and houses. For example, the tiles whose colors are coherent with the walls and other furnishing at a place have supplementary features there.
